WHY IT MATTERS
Check the exact autograph issue against CGC’s current exception list before assuming a manufacturer-issued signature needs no additional service.
Start with the exception list, not the broad label
CGC’s autograph services page says CGC x JSA authentication is not required for most pack-pulled, manufacturer-issued autographs. The important word is most: its eligibility page lists particular issues that must go through JSA. If that service was not selected for a listed card, CGC says it will add it automatically and charge the applicable authentication and grading fees.
This is a submission-planning question, separate from whether an autograph looks attractive or the card has a high condition grade. Write the complete year, manufacturer, set, signer, card number and any relevant variant before deciding which service and budget apply. A seller’s broad description of a certified autograph does not answer an issue-specific exception.
Three examples show why identity matters
The current mandatory-JSA list includes 1998 Comic Images WWF Superstarz Autographs — The Rock and 2000 Playoff Contenders Rookie Ticket Tom Brady autographs. These examples are not a statement that every wrestling or football autograph requires the same service. They demonstrate why an exact set and issue must be checked instead of assigning a rule by sport or signer.
Another entry covers all years of Upper Deck Buyback Autographs that do not have the original UDA Certificate. Here, the documentation is part of the published condition. An autograph on an Upper Deck card and an Upper Deck buyback autograph with the relevant certificate history are not interchangeable descriptions.
Use the complete live list for your own card. These selected examples do not reproduce every exception, establish a card’s authenticity or promise that an unlisted item will be accepted. CGC says the list can change at its discretion and JSA’s discretion.
Keep documentation and shipping instructions separate
The certificate-dependent buyback entry is a reason to clarify what evidence applies before preparing a parcel. It is not an instruction to mail every certificate you own. CGC’s autograph fees page separately asks submitters not to send a Certificate of Authenticity because it cannot guarantee its return.
Record the card, the exact exception text and what documentation you hold. If those instructions leave your case unclear, ask CGC how to submit that particular item and retain the answer. This guide does not resolve the document-handling question by assuming a photograph, a seller’s assurance or an unrelated certificate will substitute for the original.
Budget the actual service, without confusing the grades
CGC says autograph authentication fees are additional to card grading fees. The service page also says the full JSA authentication fee applies if the autograph is found not genuine or altered. A submission budget therefore needs the exact service, grading tier and potential authentication charge, rather than only a headline card-grading price. Its fee notes apply to direct submissions to CGC Cards in the United States by Collector members; a dealer, submission intermediary or regional service can require a separate quote.
Before submitting, make a four-field note: exact card identity, current exception-list match, documentation question and total quoted services. Authentication, an autograph grade and a card-condition grade answer different questions. Decide what you want assessed and check the current submission form before committing the item. No service was ordered or signature independently authenticated for this guide.
