Keep O-Pee-Chee in the name

Wayne Gretzky’s 1979 O-Pee-Chee #18 is a rookie card whose manufacturer is essential to identification. PSA catalogs it separately from the contemporary Topps counterpart. A shared player image is therefore insufficient for a want list or price comparison: the issue name and reverse information belong beside the number.

A hockey collection can use the card to explore a player’s emergence or the distinction between related national-market products. Those are different interests, and both are more informative than reducing the object to a generic “Gretzky rookie.” The full title makes it possible to follow the collecting story accurately.

The blue border makes condition visible

PSA’s card and set discussions identify blue-border chipping, printing defects and rough cuts among the condition issues collectors encounter. Those features explain why a complete front-and-back examination matters. A vivid central photograph can distract from wear along the outside of the card.

Ask for even lighting and enough resolution to separate a surface mark from a reflection. Manufacturing characteristics also require informed interpretation; an online guide should not label every irregular edge as later damage or claim that one photograph resolves authenticity. For a graded card, compare the offered item with the certification record and retain any qualifiers exactly.

Choose condition for the intended collection

A display collection and a graded registry project may prioritize different examples. One collector may value an appealing portrait with visible age, while another requires a particular grade for a defined set. Clarifying the purpose first prevents a headline result from turning a modest collecting project into an undefined pursuit of perfection.

When comparing copies, describe the features that matter rather than treating the grade as the entire appearance. Centering, border wear and print quality can affect the visual experience in different ways. The aim is to understand the actual card being considered, not to invent an alternative numerical grade from photographs.

The famous private sale is a separate record

Heritage announced a USD 3.75 million private transaction involving a PSA Gem Mint 10 example on May 27, 2021. Its report described that example as one of two known in the grade at the time. That historical statement should remain dated; it is not a substitute for a current population check.

The announcement does not disclose the exact closing day or the private fee terms. It also does not value every O-Pee-Chee #18. The linked reporting preserves those limitations, while this profile provides the edition and condition context needed to read them. A celebrated sale is most useful when it helps a collector identify the right object more carefully.

Inspect the actual example

  • Verify O-Pee-Chee and number 18 on the actual card and label.
  • Inspect blue-border chipping, centering, print defects, rough edges and the reverse.
  • Preserve grade qualifiers and verify the holder’s certification before comparing sold examples.
